Common questions

1099 & Year-End Preparation: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 1099, and who needs to file one?

A Form 1099-NEC reports payments you made to independent contractors — people and unincorporated businesses you paid for services. For payments made in 2026, you generally must file one for anyone you paid $2,000 or more (the threshold was $600 through 2025). Payments to corporations usually don't need a 1099, with exceptions like attorneys' fees.

When are 1099s due for 2026?

Forms 1099-NEC for 2026 payments are due to both your contractors and the IRS by February 1, 2027 — the usual January 31 deadline falls on a Sunday. The IRS charges penalties per form for filing late, and the penalty grows the longer you wait, so it pays to have your W-9s collected and your contractor totals ready in early January.

How should I prepare for year-end?

Reconcile every account through December, confirm your contractor payment totals, collect missing W-9s, clean up old open invoices and bills, and get everything to your tax preparer early. Starting in November makes January much calmer.
